General Safety Tips
-
Always be aware of your surroundings, and pay particular attention to the people around you.
-
Report suspicious circumstances and characters to the nearest police station (see useful and emergency contacts) or alternatively you can call 10111. Should a police officer be nearby, you could also inform him/her. The South African Police (SAP) is identified by blue uniforms and clearly marked white cars with SAPS signage in blue. The Metro Police (or traffic police) are dressed in blue shirts and beige pants and the cars are white with Metro Police marked in orange. If you have an armed response company (such as ADT or Chubb) or you live in a gated community, ensure that you know the relevant telephone number/s off by heart.
-
One of our local radio stations, 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s holding company, Primedia has a launched a Crime Line whereby you can report any crime you may have witnessed or any suspicious behaviour that you may have seen. This can be done by going onto www.crimeline.co.za or alternatively you can SMS (text) 32211.
-
Always keep your belongings out of view (especially when driving and walking in the street.) Avoid wearing anything flashy such as jewellery, expensive watches, eyewear etc.
-
Keep travel documents, money and expensive jewellery in a safe place rather than carrying it around with you.
-
If you carry a handbag it is advisable that you keep it closed at all times.
-
Avoid hanging your handbag over the back of your chair in side walk cafes and indoor restaurants or even in the office. Place it under the table near your feet and be conscious of where it is at all times.
-
Lost passports should be reported to your country’s embassy or consulate and the South African Police Service (SAPS) immediately (please see details of foreign representation in South Africa on this website.)
-
Lock as you go: even if you are just going to the shop, ensure that you lock all your doors, windows and patio sliding doors.
-
Before embarking on a trip or excursion, it is important to know exactly where you are going. Ensure that you carry a good guidebook and map on your person at all times so that in the event that you get lost, you are able to find your way.
-
Where ever possible travel with your mobile phone and ensure that it has a fully charged battery.
-
Generally speaking it is not advisable for foreigners to go into townships, informal settlements and downtown areas. Like many countries in the world, until you are familiar with the area, it is unsafe to walk around at night or use ATMs. We urge you to stay clear of dark and isolated places.

Street Smart Guide
The Street Smart Guide is a comprehensive guide to living in SA. A lot of the information you may have read before coming to South Africa, so this serves as a both as reminder and information guide. You will see that there are many extra’s such as maps, places to go, advice, shopping centre info etc. So it is well worth downloading the information and carrying it on you at all times.

Social Club
The Social Club offers a range of sporting and social activities at subsidised rates to improve teaming, work-life balance and general wellbeing. As the critical mass in the non-Johannesburg locations does not allow the exact replication of the same mode of operation in each location, these locations organise different events on a regular basis according to the needs and interests of the people at these sites.
Want to join the club?
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP
All it will cost you is R8.00 per month which is paid via a payroll deduction on a monthly basis. The money collected from this fee is used to run the club and provide approximately 30% subsidy on the various events organised.
SUB SECTION MEMBERSHIP
Additionally, the Club has different sections operating in Johannesburg which are run by committees according to the interests of the employees. These sub sections organise activities for the members of the various groups.
Each of the sub sections has a defined monthly subscription fee that is paid by the members via the payroll. The membership fees vary according to the cost and number of events planned by each section and the sub section fees are used in conjunction with the Club general membership fee, to subsidise the events for each section to the greatest possible degree.
SUB SECTIONS
In addition to the R8.00 per month, subscription to the various sub-sections is as follows:
SUB SECTION MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION
Golf R30.00
Hiking R6.00
Soccer R20.00
Anyone wishing to propose a new sub section is most welcome to contact one of the Trustees to discuss.

Social Club Activities
Social Events
The Club arranges at least one social event per month in the form of a dinner, Sunday lunch, theatre evening, etc. These events are subsidised and are advertised on the weekly newsletter as well as on ADS and places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The greater your interest, the greater the number of events presented.
The employee contribution (i.e. the cost less the subsidy) is to be paid via a single payroll deduction per event.
Weekend Escapes
At least two weekend escapes per year will be organised – watch the Newsletter and ADS for details.
Club Shop Merchandise
The Social Club shop, located at your place of work, offers a range of corporate gifts and branded merchandise at cost price for personal use or gifts.
The shop is open Monday – Friday from 08h30 – 12h00. To join the club speak to your Kelly Account Executive
