Transport

The reality is that Public transport is a challenge in SA. The chief mode of transport is a car. Kelly has sourced certain companies that can assist you with transport at an additional cost. They will take you to and from work (at a certain cost per month or day). Please note: you may find better/cheaper transport options when you get here.

Alternative Transport
You will need reliable transport to get you to and from work daily! You will need to organize your own transportation to and from work. Kelly has arranged special rates with Anthony’s Cabby. See below for details:

Anthony’s Cabby
Cell: +27 73 471 6632
Rates for Transfers: Edenvale R135 p/p per day, reduced to R100 p/p per day if there are 4 or more passengers. Any other transportation requirements that you may have may be discussed directly with yourself and Anthony at an agreed rate.

Terms and Conditions
The rates quoted above are pre-negotiated rates between Anthony’s Cabby and Kelly. Once confirmation has been given that you will be requiring the month's transport, no refunds will be given to you even if you do not require the transport after a month's stay at the selected guest houses.

All payments for transport are to be made up front in cash to Anthony prior to commencement of the transport. These payments are collected from you on arrival at the airport. Should you wish to use the above company, please advise your Kelly Onboarding Specialist.

Self Drive
Driving yourself around

  • Please ensure you have an international Drivers License before you arrive.
  • Americans please note that you will most likely have to learn to drive a stick shift as these cars are generally cheaper and more readily available.

Having your own car will maximize your independence. As driving by car is the best way to get around, we recommend that you share the cost of a car with other people that you meet at your place of work. By doing so, you will cut down on your costs and your salary is likely to stretch further. Please ensure you have an international Drivers License before you arrive. Like any city, allow more time to get through traffic at peak times. If you are going to be driving to places that are unknown to you, plan your trip prior to departure.

You can do so on Map Studio www.mapstudio.co.za

South Africa is a right hand drive country; if you intend hiring a car and driving yourself, make sure you stick to the left side of the road. Whether you are a foreigner or a local, always have a valid driver’s license and your passport or ID on hand.

Please do not drink and drive, have a designated driver and please be responsible.

Drivers Licenses
Foreign nationals are permitted to drive in South Africa on a Foreign Driver’s License providing that:

  • The license is valid
  • It is in English
  • If it is not in English it should be accompanied by a translation from a registered translation service or preferably your embassy.
  • It has a photograph and signature of the driver

International Driving Permits (IDP)
In order to get finance or insurance cover you will require an IDP.
An IDP can only be obtained in the country which issued the original driver’s license. So you must apply for one  in your country before you arrive in South Africa. IDPs are generally valid for one year and with few exceptions must be renewed in the country of issue.
Details of where to apply for a permit in each county can be found on:
http://www.drivers.com/article/207

Renewals/ New IDP
A new IDP can be applied for 4-6 weeks before the expiration of the old one.
Application for a new one can only be made in the country of origin, so it may be a good idea to prepare the necessary documents and give it to a friend/ relative before you depart so that they can make application for you and send it to you in SA.

Documents required are:

  • Completed application form
  • 2 passport photographs
  • Certified copy of driver’s license and passport

You can contact the local AA (Automobile Association of South Africa) for further details.
Tel: +27 82 282 1000

Exchanging a Foreign Driver's License
A foreign driver's license may be exchanged for a South African driver's license if:

  • the license is valid
  • the license is in an official language of South Africa
  • the license is accompanied by a letter of validity obtained from the relevant embassy and a translation (if the license is not in an official language of South Africa)
  • the license has a photo and signature of the holder.

Unless you intend on staying in South Africa permanently it is not advisable to convert your home country license to a South African license as you will be required to obtain a new license in your country on your return.

* Be careful that your home country license does not expire while you are in SA, or you will have to take the test again upon your return.

Buying & Insuring a Car
Buying a car remains one of the easiest and most reliable ways of getting around. Below are some links to websites where you can find second hand cars. It is always a good idea to take the car to the Automobile Association (AA) to have the mechanical and police checks done before purchasing the vehicle.

In South Africa insurance is not required, but definitely a good idea! There are two basic types of insurance in South Africa:

  • Comprehensive
  • Balance of third party liability, fire and theft

There are many factors which determine the ability to insure and the cost of insuring. If the vehicle is older than 10 years, you are required to present a valuation certificate. Most insurance agencies do not insure short term. To qualify for insurance you must be in possession of either a South African driver’s license or an international driver’s license.

Registering a Vehicle

Vehicle - Licensing and Registration
  www.services.gov.za  /  www.joburg.org.za
To get the vehicle signed over from the previous owner various paperwork has to be presented and completed. The following steps are necessary when licensing and registering a vehicle in South Africa.

  • Certificate of Registration
  • Traffic Register Number Certificate
  • Roadworthy Test Certificate
  • Application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle - RLV (blue form)
  • Notification of Change of Ownership/Sale of Motor Vehicle - NCO (yellow form)

Certificate of Registration
This is the certificate that the current owner provides which lists all the particulars of the vehicle.

Traffic Register Number Certificate
This is a necessary document that you must apply for (can be done at any Roadworthy test centre) if you wish to register and license a vehicle. There is no cost for the certificate but if you lose it a replacement will cost R100. Two passport size photos are required for the application.

Roadworthy Test Certificate
All vehicles that transfer ownership require a valid Roadworthy certificate. The test centres perform a relatively thorough test to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy. They test lights, brakes, suspension, tires, exhaust etc. The certificate is valid for six months but you are not required to renew this certificate as long as you own the vehicle. At the time of sale, to register and license the vehicle in the new owner's name, a valid Roadworthy certificate must be presented. The roadworthy test costs R200 and if you fail, you have 14 days to correct the problems and are then entitled to one free re-test.

Application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle
The particulars of the new owner and the vehicle need to be filled out on this form. You must have a valid identification number (i.e. a Traffic Register Number). The licensing fee for the vehicle for one year is R325. You are given a license disc which is attached to the inside of the windshield.

Notification of Change of Ownership/Sale of Motor Vehicle
The particulars of the buyer, the seller and the identification of the vehicle must be filled out on this form.

Hiring a Car
Traditional car hire is not an affordable alternative for daily use however should you decide to travel and take long trips, this is most certainly a viable option. Please see below for reliable car rental companies.

Tempest

Europcar
Tel: +27 086 001 1344

These companies are internationally recognised.

Hiring a Car
Bear in mind also that most car hire companies here require that you be at least 23 years of age to hire a car. And you need to be a credit card holder.

Provided your home country licence includes your photo and signature and is in one of S.A.'s official languages, there is no legal requirement for an international driver’s license.

The official SA language list includes English, so that covers US, Australian and UK licenses and many others. Even non-English licences are OK, provided there is an attached translation by a "competent authority" (a registered translation service or your embassy).

Of course, if you are pre-booking your car rental, it’s worth asking your specific car hire company if they have different requirements from the norm – that avoids hassle and stress when you get to them! Sometimes car rental companies seem to be a law unto themselves.
